Trace minerals are inorganic substances found in all body tissues and fluids. Trace minerals, which are essential for the human body, have important roles in maintaining biochemical functions for the life of all living things. Excessive intake of some minerals can cause toxic effects by disrupting homeostatic balance, while mineral deficiencies can disrupt the delicate balance of body functions in a healthy individual. The aim of this book chapter is to review the latest basic data on the participation of trace minerals in physiological processes, their metabolism, entry routes and volumes into the body, their association with various diseases, and the medical applications of trace minerals. Furthermore, this book chapter can serve as a useful and readily available source of literature review for physicians, nutritionists, researchers in the field of micronutrients in medicine and biology, and students of health sciences.
