From prehistory to the present day, people have remained curious about the possibility of altering mental states by physically manipulating brain function. The evolution from trepanation in prehistoric times to deep brain stimulation today indicates significant progress in psychosurgery.Psychosurgery is a field that integrates techniques, usually invasive, designed to alleviate the distress that occurs in cases that do not respond to traditional treatments. In conclusion,as long as there are psychiatric disorders that are resistant to commonly used methods,it is possible to assess,in the light of randomised controlled trials, that psychosurgery has the potential to be a fundamental component of treatment approaches.
