This book chapter examines the evolution of laboratory techniques in medicine. Observations and experiments throughout history have laid the foundations for scientific research into the development of modern laboratory diagnostic techniques and paved the way for modern medical biochemistry. From the mid-1800s onwards, the use of hospital laboratories to diagnose disease was an important milestone, especially in detecting epidemic diseases such as tuberculosis and cholera. In the early 20th century, the critical role of laboratories in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases came to the fore, even at a time when treatment methods were limited. Advances in areas such as blood banking and blood transfusion, with the contributions of pioneering scientists, made significant contributions to diagnostic tests and inspired modern techniques.
