This study aims to determine pre-service science teachers' individual written argument construction skills and the types of informal reasoning in their arguments on socioscientific issues such as nanotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetic products within the scope of the Special Topics in Biology course during distance education. Conducted using the case study design, one of the qualitative research methods, the study group consisted of 41 fourth-year pre-service science teachers studying at Atatürk University. Competing theories activities for nanotechnology and vee diagram activities for pharmaceuticals and cosmetic products were used to collect data, which were then descriptively analyzed according to Toulmin's Argument Pattern, argument levels developed by Erduran et al. (2004), and types of informal reasoning. The analysis results reveal that for nanotechnology, pre-service teachers mostly generated high-quality arguments at Level 5 (48.8%) and Level 4 (31.7%), whereas for pharmaceuticals and cosmetic products, arguments were mainly concentrated at Level 4 (39.0%) and Level 3 (36.6%). Furthermore, while all pre-service teachers (100%) employed rational informal reasoning in both activities, emotional (31.7%) and intuitive (46.3%) reasonings increased significantly in the pharmaceuticals and cosmetics activity compared to nanotechnology due to the topic's nature. The research demonstrates that written argumentation practices in distance education support pre-service teachers' higher-level argument construction skills.
