This study aims to determine prospective biology teachers' levels of knowledge regarding current environmental concepts such as biophilia, biophobia, ecophilia, ecophobia, connectedness to nature, and nature deficit. Executed using a qualitative research method, the study's working group consists of a total of 69 prospective teachers (62 female, 7 male) studying in the Department of Biology Education at a state university during the spring semester of the 2021-2022 academic year. Data were collected using a measurement tool prepared by the researchers consisting of 6 open-ended questions, and the obtained responses were analyzed using content analysis. According to the findings, 21.7% of prospective teachers stated that they had previously heard of biophilia, 29.9% biophobia, 17.4% ecophilia, 18.8% ecophobia, 52.2% connectedness to nature, and 30.4% nature deficit. Among the candidates who reported having heard these concepts, the correct definition rates were determined as 40% for biophilia, 60% for biophobia, 41.7% for ecophilia, 69.2% for ecophobia, 47.2% for connectedness to nature, and 19.1% for nature deficit. School, courses, articles, media, and everyday conversations stood out among prospective teachers' information sources. As a result of the study, it was determined that prospective teachers' knowledge levels regarding current environmental concepts were generally insufficient, and they particularly had difficulty distinguishing concepts like biophilia-ecophilia and biophobia-ecophobia from one another. In line with the findings, it is recommended that environmental education course contents in faculties of education be enriched with current ecological concepts and candidates keep their knowledge up to date.
