This study aims to examine the effect of design-based STEM activities on the engineering knowledge level of middle school eighth-grade students. In the research, a pretest-posttest design with matched random control groups was used, and the study group consisted of 103 eighth-grade students (50 control, 53 experimental) studying at a public middle school in Ereğli district of Zonguldak. During the implementation process, the current curriculum was carried out with the control group, while nine different STEM activities based on the engineering design process steps proposed by Hynes et al. were conducted with the experimental group. The "Engineering Knowledge Scale" was used as the data collection tool, and the gathered data were analyzed using dependent and independent samples t-tests. As a result of the research, no significant difference was found between the pretest and posttest scores of the control group, whereas the posttest score average of the experimental group was found to be statistically significantly higher than its pretest score average. Additionally, when comparing the posttest score averages of the experimental and control groups, a significant difference in favor of the experimental group was determined. These findings demonstrate that design-based STEM applications are more effective in enhancing students' engineering knowledge levels compared to the current curriculum and that such activities should be disseminated in educational settings.
