Narrating the Enemy: The Image of “Ottoman/Turk” in Armenian History Textbooks

Bu kitap, Ermeni tarih ders kitaplarında \"Osmanlı/Türk\" imajını ele almaktadır. Yıldız Deveci Bozkuş tarafından yazılan bu çalışma, Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu (TÜBİTAK) tarafından finanse edilen ve Prof. Dr. Mehmet Hacısalihoğlu tarafından yönetilen bir proje kapsamında hazırlanmıştır. Proje, Balkan ve Karadeniz ülkelerinin ilkokul ve ortaokullarında öğretilen tarih ders kitaplarında Osmanlı/Türk imajını karşılaştırmalı olarak incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu çalışma ise bu projenin bir parçası olarak, 2010-2011 akademik yılında Ermenistan'daki ilkokul ve ortaokullarda öğretilen tarih ders kitaplarını incelemektedir. Çalışmanın teorik çerçevesi imgoloji tarafından oluşturulmuştur. Bu bağlamda, çalışma Osmanlı/Türk kavramsallaştırması için olumsuz ve önyargılı algıları, kalıp yargıları ve imajları incelemekte ve bu algıların oluşumunda önemli faktörlere odaklanmaktadır. Tarih ders kitapları, metinsel söylemlerin yanı sıra haritalar, resimler, çizimler gibi görsel materyaller de incelenerek açık/gizli anlatılar ve imajlar ortaya çıkarılmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türk-Ermeni ilişkilerinde geçmişten günümüze yaşanan çatışmaların barışçıl çözümüne katkıda bulunmaktır. Bilindiği gibi, toplumlar ve yöneticiler tarafından üretilen değer yargıları ve algılar, toplumsal çatışmaların çözümünde önemli bir rol oynamaktadır. Bu değer yargılarının öğrenilmesinde en etkili faktörlerden biri ise ilkokullardır. Bu kurumlarda \"zorunlu\" öğrenme süreçleri ve iletilen bilgi, \"öteki\"nin imajının rolünü belirler.

This book examines the \"Ottoman/Turkish\" image in Armenian history textbooks. Written by Yıldız Deveci Bozkuş, this work was prepared as part of a project funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) and directed by Prof. Dr. Mehmet Hacısalihoğlu. The project aims to compare the Ottoman/Turkish image in history textbooks taught in primary and secondary schools in Balkan and Black Sea countries. This study, as part of the project, examines the history textbooks taught in primary and secondary schools in Armenia during the 2010-2011 academic year. The theoretical framework of the study is established by imagology. In this context, the study examines negative and biased perceptions, stereotypes, and images associated with the conceptualization of the Ottoman/Turkish identity, focusing on important factors in the formation of these perceptions. In addition to textual discourses, visual materials such as maps, pictures, and drawings are also analyzed to reveal explicit/implicit narratives and images. The aim of this study is to contribute to the peaceful resolution of conflicts in Turkish-Armenian relations from the past to the present. As known, value judgments and perceptions produced by societies and leaders play a significant role in resolving social conflicts. One of the most influential factors in learning these value judgments is primary schools. The \"mandatory\" learning processes and transmitted knowledge in these institutions determine the role of the image of the \"other\".
