Respectful Maternity Care is a holistic and evidence-based approach that respects human rights and ethical principles, focuses on the individual, considers women's preferences and needs, and promotes practices that prioritise the newborn. Respectful maternity care contributes to women's health and development by ensuring that they have a positive birth experience rather than simply being satisfied with what is available. Women who feel respected are less anxious about childbirth and can be more participatory. The birth environment can also affect both the woman's health outcomes and well-being and the midwife's work performance. Poorly designed delivery rooms are less safe, can cause harm to women, and can also become poor working environments for staff. Risk factors affecting respectful maternity care are illustrated by an ecological model consisting of interrelated circles at the individual and system levels. To ensure respectful care, interventions targeting these risk factors should not be used in isolation. Integrating interventions targeting various risk factors will increase the likelihood of change.
