The integration of hydrotherapy into childbirth practices dates back to the early 20th century, although the therapeutic use of water extends to the origins of human history. Initially met with skepticism, water birth has gained acceptance through growing scientific evidence. Healthcare professionals committed to woman-centered, minimally interventive care increasingly regard water birth as a vital component of obstetric practice. Water birth offers numerous maternal benefits, including enhanced mobility, reduced labor pain, decreased medical interventions and perineal trauma, and sustained physiological and hormonal regulation during labor. These factors contribute to greater maternal satisfaction, autonomy, and potentially improved neonatal outcomes due to the favorable influence on neurohormonal processes. Protocols developed for water birth—including pool standards and clinical management guidelines—ensure safety and help mitigate potential complications. Two main approaches exist: immersion during all stages of labor or only during the first stage. Regardless of the model, both aim to manage labor pain effectively, empower the birthing woman, provide continuous midwifery support, and promote respectful maternity care. Ultimately, water birth represents a holistic approach that supports a positive birth experience by aligning physiological processes with maternal comfort, autonomy, and evidence-based practice.
