Qualitative genetics examines the inheritance of traits that can be observed as distinct phenotypic categories and are generally controlled by a single gene locus or a small number of genes. This chapter presents the fundamental concepts and characteristics of qualitative genetics within the framework of Mendelian inheritance and discusses different inheritance patterns, including dominance, recessiveness, codominance, and gene interactions. The importance of qualitative traits in animal breeding is illustrated through examples such as horned and polled phenotypes in cattle, coat color and pattern, milk protein variants, muscular hypertrophy, and certain inherited diseases. The chapter also addresses the roles of pedigree analysis, genetic crosses, molecular markers, and genotyping methods in identifying qualitative traits and incorporating them into selection programs. Finally, current applications of genome-editing technologies, including TALEN and CRISPR-Cas9, are discussed in relation to traits such as disease resistance and polledness. Overall, the chapter provides an integrated perspective on the significance of qualitative genetics in animal genetics and breeding, from classical Mendelian principles to modern biotechnological applications.
