The transition to primary school is characterized as a holistic “ecological transition” within the framework of Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, symbolizing a shift for the child from a play-oriented environment to a new structure with strict rules and high academic expectations. During this transition process, assessing children’s level of school readiness is a systematic data-collection and interpretation activity aimed at adapting the system to children’s developmental needs, rather than labeling children as “ready” or “not ready.” The process must not be limited to cognitive or literacy skills alone; rather, it must be holistic, process-oriented, culturally sensitive, and grounded in the principles of multi-source data collection through a triangulation approach. In the literature, three main methodological approaches are generally adopted for assessing school readiness: formal (structured), informal (natural/process-oriented), and dynamic assessment, which has gained prominence in recent years. In this context, formal assessment aims to objectively identify potential developmental risks by comparing the child to a norm group using standardized tools such as the Metropolitan School Readiness Test or the Marmara Primary School Readiness Scale. Informal assessment, on the other hand, allows for the observation of the child’s actual performance within their natural routines—with high ecological validity—through systematic observations, anecdotal records, checklists, portfolios, and play-based techniques. Finally, dynamic assessment, based on Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development theory, applies the pretest-instruction-posttest methodology to measure not the child’s static achievement but their learning potential with adult support (scaffolding); this helps distinguish between learning difficulties and a lack of environmental stimulation.
