This chapter examines primary school readiness as a process beginning at birth, focusing on the roles of the school, family, and society in the child’s life. Accordingly, Britto’s conception of school readiness is addressed through the intertwined and eclectic relationships among school, child, family, and society. Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory is discussed with reference to its layered structure and emphasis on direct and indirect child–environment interactions. The chapter also considers belonging, teacher–child relationships, individual differences, continuity between preschool and primary education, and the need for a ready-school environment that values interaction and cultural values. It highlights how parental attitudes, practices, support, and beliefs about the child, together with social rules, values, welfare, and quality of life within the community, influence readiness and a healthy transition to school. Comprehensive, continuous intervention programmes grounded in equal opportunity and incorporating monitoring and evaluation are also examined. Although their primary purpose is to support school readiness, these programmes also enhance early literacy, executive functioning, and social-emotional skills. In conclusion, national, multidimensional, inclusive, sustainable, evidence-based readiness programmes that respect cultural and individual differences and involve stakeholders are needed.
