Calves are highly susceptible to health problems because of limited body reserves at birth and immature immune systems. Calf losses cause direct economic losses and have significant consequences, including slowed genetic progress, reduced farm sustainability, and compromised animal welfare. Because calf diseases and mortality cluster in specific periods, identifying period-specific risk factors is critical for effective control strategies. Stillbirths and deaths shortly after birth are mostly associated with dystocia, whereas diarrhea and respiratory diseases are the leading causes of mortality during the pre-weaning period. Umbilical infections are particularly common during the first two weeks of life. Effective vaccination programs against infectious agents; proper management of insemination, pregnancy, calving, and the postpartum period; and appropriate calf care and feeding practices, especially ensuring adequate and timely colostrum intake, are among the main preventive approaches. In this context, effective management of all processes from pregnancy to weaning, the expansion of producer education programs, and the improvement of regular record-keeping practices are of great importance. Systematic analysis of herd management factors and the implementation of appropriate measures based on the identification of farm-specific risk factors are considered fundamental approaches to reducing calf losses.
