Toxicology is an interdisciplinary science that studies the harmful effects of chemical, biological, and physical agents on living organisms. This section discusses the definition, historical development, and sub-disciplines of toxicology, explaining fundamental concepts for understanding the effects of toxic substances on organisms. The concept of poison (toxic substance) is defined as a substance that, when ingested by an organism, disrupts biological functions and produces harmful effects. The most important determining factor in classifying a substance as a poison is the dose. The dose-toxicity relationship reveals that the effect of a substance is related to the amount of exposure and plays a fundamental role in determining safe usage limits. The duration and frequency of exposure are also important in the emergence of toxic effects, and peracute, acute, subacute, subchronic, and chronic toxicity types describe the development process of poisoning. Furthermore, the causative agent, host, and environmental factors must be considered together in the occurrence of poisonings. The properties of the toxic substance, the animal species, age, physiological state, and environmental conditions are among the key elements affecting the level of toxicity. The fundamental toxicology information discussed in this section forms an important scientific foundation for preventing poisonings, ensuring the safe and responsible use of medications, and accurately assessing environmental risks in veterinary practice.
