In veterinary medicine, digestive and respiratory system diseases are among the most frequently encountered clinical problems, and the effective use of medications in the symptomatic and supportive treatment of these diseases is of great importance. This chapter comprehensively addresses digestive and respiratory system medications, based on anatomical and physiological differences among animal species. For digestive system diseases, the mechanisms of action and uses of emetic and antiemetic drugs, drugs regulating gastric acid secretion, mucosal protective drugs, prokinetics, antidiarrheal drugs, laxatives, digestants, appetite suppressants, appetite stimulants, drugs used in the treatment of chronic colitis, ruminant-specific digestive system drugs, and drugs affecting bile function are detailed. Similarly, the mechanisms of action and uses of bronchodilators, mucolytics, expectorants, decongestants, and antitussive drugs used to control airway resistance and inflammation in respiratory system diseases are also detailed. The main aim of this chapter is to provide veterinarians with an up-to-date knowledge base for clinical applications in disease management, within the context of relevant physiological mechanisms, receptor interactions, and species-specific differences.
