This essay examines the transformation of the color green throughout history and its conflicting meanings, focusing on its materiality. Green embodies a powerful duality: on the one hand, it symbolizes nature and vitality (vert gai), while on the other, it evokes decay, toxic waste, alien objects, and ghosts (vert perdu). After a brief history of the color green, which is difficult to obtain and maintain, and considering the pigments or color mixtures from which it is obtained and their material properties, the essay focuses on its various meanings beyond its representation of nature, particularly its use in contemporary art. In the works of contemporary artists who open up space for the material power of colors, green emerges as an actor, an agent, a material entity. Beyond its representation of nature, green functions as a material-event, reproduced and identified in new landscapes through physical or chemical intervention. This color, unstable in terms of meaning and materiality, comes to the forefront with concepts such as toxic sublimity, the Anthropocene, the Chthulucene, and the synthetic production of nature, in the process of transitioning to a non-anthropocentric worldview. The aim of this essay is to rethink the new field of aesthetic experience that opens up by focusing on the materiality underlying the color green.
