Turuncunun Kültürel Yansımaları Bağlamında Bir Geçit: “The Gates”
From the etymological journey of the color orange to its use in the visual arts, and from its spiritual symbolism in the East to its functional and identity-related connotations in the West, this study reveals that orange carries a culturally constructed meaning. Orange, the color of sanctity in Buddhism and Hinduism, appears as a threshold symbol in the Shinto tradition in Japan, as a political expression of national identity in the Netherlands, and as a vehicle for emotional expression in Western visual arts. Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s 2005 installation “The Gates” in New York’s Central Park is examined as the most striking point of convergence of this East-West tension in the visual arts. This interpretation, which spans from the naming tension between saffron and orange to the formal connection established with Torii gates, demonstrates that orange is not merely a color but has also transformed into a metaphor for a cultural passageway stretching from East to West.
