The chapter “Blood and Circulatory Physiology” provides a comprehensive overview of blood and circulatory physiology in horses. It begins with the composition of blood, including plasma, cellular components, and the physiological roles of major plasma proteins. The structure and function of erythrocytes, oxygen and carbon dioxide transport, erythropoiesis, and the unique splenic red blood cell reservoir of horses are discussed in relation to athletic performance and oxygen delivery. The chapter also examines leukocyte classification and immune functions, as well as the role of platelets in hemostasis and coagulation. Cardiac anatomy, heart valves, the cardiac conduction system, and the cardiac cycle are presented to explain how blood is pumped throughout the body. Pulmonary and systemic circulation are reviewed alongside the functional characteristics of arteries, veins, and capillaries. Special emphasis is placed on hemodynamics, capillary exchange, venous return mechanisms, and equine-specific adaptations such as the contribution of the hoof to venous circulation. The chapter concludes with an overview of the lymphatic system and its roles in fluid balance, lipid transport, and immune defense, linking fundamental physiological principles to clinical and practical applications in equine medicine.
