This study aims to examine gender discrimination in the field of sports from historical and institutional perspectives. Although sports are often presented as a universal, neutral, and egalitarian domain, they appear as a social structure in which gender-based inequalities are produced and reproduced throughout history. In this context, the study first distinguishes between the concepts of sex and gender, emphasizing that gender is a culturally and historically constructed phenomenon. The research addresses the reflections of patriarchal social structures in the field of sports and demonstrates that modern sports became institutionalized within a male-dominated framework. In particular, the development of modern sports in the 19th century was shaped around values such as masculinity, competition, and physical strength, which significantly limited women’s presence in sports. Biological and cultural myths that hindered women’s participation played an important role in legitimizing this inequality throughout history. A major aspect of these myths is that they were largely created by men. However, from the second half of the 20th century onward, the strengthening of women’s movements and legal regulations increased the visibility of women in sports. Nevertheless, inequalities persist in areas such as sports management, media representation, and access to economic resources. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that sports not only reflect gender inequalities but also actively produce them, highlighting the necessity of structural transformation for achieving equality.
