Periodontal diseases are among the most commonly encountered oral pathologies in dogs and cats. In most cases, this chronic condition is recognized late and inadequately treated by both pet owners and veterinarians, significantly compromising the life quality of the animals. Although dental plaque is the primary etiological factor, the severity of the clinical presentation is largely determined by the host immune response. Gingivitis is defined as a reversible inflammation, whereas periodontitis is characterized by the destruction of supporting tissues and is generally irreversible. Therefore, early diagnosis and appropriate management of periodontal diseases are critical for maintaining oral health and preventing systemic complications. Preservation of oral health is equivalent to maintaining the health of the animal. In this chapter, the components, stages, and pathophysiology of periodontal disease, as well as diagnostic methods, treatment options, and prognostic evaluation from a holistic perspective were comprehensively addressed.
