The concept of respect refers to an individual’s valuing of oneself and others, safeguarding their rights, and preserving their dignity. Trust, respect, and similar fundamental concepts hold significant importance not only in human life but also in the provision of health care services. The concepts of motherhood and care constitute integral components of obstetric services. As the concept of human rights has moved beyond abstraction and become visible in daily life through increasing societal awareness, women have been placed at the center of maternity care, particularly in the context of reproductive health and childbirth, which represents one of its most critical components. From this perspective, studies in this field have gained a multidimensional character, leading to the emergence of the concept of respectful maternity care. Therefore, in the provision of maternity care, the identification of evidence-based and sustainable strategies and interventions constitutes a fundamental requirement for improving the quality of care delivered. These strategies are particularly guiding in enhancing care quality, protecting maternal and newborn health, and strengthening human rights–based approaches within health services. The future directions of the midwifery profession will be shaped and advanced in alignment with these strategies and interventions, encompassing a broad perspective ranging from the structuring of educational programs to the standardization of clinical practices, as well as from policy development processes to the determination of research priorities.
