Childbirth is the most important event in a woman's life, and every woman needs and deserves respectful care during and after labor. Women should have the right to make informed decisions about whether or not to use any intervention. Therefore, they should be active participants in decisions that affect their own health and the health of their newborn babies. An informed choice or decision is a rational choice made by an individual based on relevant information about the advantages and disadvantages of available treatment options and all possible courses of action (including no action at all). Informed choice and decision-making are fundamental aspects of respectful maternal care, as recommended by the World Health Organization. Women's belief in their ability to give birth influences how they acquire information and make their own choices. Midwives need to provide individualized care to women and keep in mind that their own attitudes affect women's choices and experiences.
