Childbirth is one of the most unforgettable experiences in a woman’s life. During this period, women develop expectations about the events they may encounter. These expectations are shaped by a combination of personal characteristics, cultural beliefs, social support, and the level of trust they place in the healthcare system. Fundamentally, women wish to see behaviors aligned with the principles of respectful maternity care, including dignity, privacy, participation in birth, and continuous support. Expectations regarding the prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum periods vary considerably. Access to information and effective communication with healthcare professionals during pregnancy; adequate pain management, active involvement during labor; sufficient social support after birth all play a crucial role in enabling women to have a positive childbirth experience. When women’s expectations are met, they report greater satisfaction during labor, experience more favorable outcomes for both mother and baby, and develop lasting trust in healthcare services. In this section, the factors influencing women’s expectations about childbirth will be examined comprehensively, expectations related to the prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum periods will be evaluated from a holistic perspective. Additionally, the significance of meeting these expectations for maternal health, psychological well-being, family dynamics will be discussed, recommendations for healthcare professionals and policymakers will be provided.
