A Final Act of Authorship: Virginia Woolf’s Suicide Note as Text, Voice, and Legacy

Özet

In her study, Mevlüde Zengin aims to reconsider the suicide note of Virginia Woolf not merely as a biographical document, but as a consciously crafted literary text that encapsulates the writer’s enduring artistic concerns. Long situated at the margins of literary analysis due to its intimate and tragic context, the letter addressed to Leonard Woolf invites a more nuanced reading when approached through the lens of modernist aesthetics. Rather than interpreting it solely as an expression of despair, this study positions the letter as a final act of authorship, one that reflects Woolf’s sustained engagement with questions of voice, selfhood, and narrative control. Drawing on Woolf’s major works, including Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, and The Waves, Zengin explores how the stylistic and thematic qualities of the note resonate with her broader literary practice. Through this approach, the study ultimately argues that Woolf transforms a private farewell into a deliberate and meaningful literary gesture.
