Phytoremediation is an environmentally friendly method used to remove, stabilize, or render harmless pollutants in soil, water, and air environments. In agricultural areas, heavy metals, pesticides, and other toxic compounds negatively affect soil fertility and product quality, posing risks to ecosystems and human health. Phytoremediation is based on the principle of removing these pollutants through plants, accumulating them in tissues, transporting them, or rendering them ineffective through biochemical processes. Fast-growing, deep-rooted, and hyperaccumulator plants are preferred in agriculture; species belonging to the Brassicaceae, Asteraceae, and Poaceae families, among others, are commonly used to remove heavy metal pollution. The advantages of phytoremediation include low cost, environmental friendliness, aesthetic application possibilities, preservation of soil structure, and applicability over large areas. Its disadvantages are the long process time, reduced plant productivity in heavily contaminated areas, and limited applicability based on root depth. The effectiveness of phytoremediation can be increased through appropriate plant selection, microorganism-assisted applications, and genetic improvements. In conclusion, phytoremediation offers an economical and feasible solution for protecting soil health in agriculture, maintaining ecosystem balance, and supporting sustainable production.
