This review examines the cycle of heavy metals inorganic pollutants that are becoming an increasingly significant problem in soil and environmental ecosystems within the soil-plant system. It also covers the causes of contamination, toxic effects and remediation methods. Heavy metals are released into the environment through anthropogenic activities such as industrialisation, mining and intensive agriculture, and they accumulate in the soil over many years because they are not biodegradable. Heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) can pose a threat to human health via the food chain, causing serious physiological damage and reducing crop yields through effects such as the inhibition of photosynthesis, the inactivation of enzymes, oxidative stress and growth retardation. The negative impact of heavy metals on agriculture is a serious food safety concern. Furthermore, this study details effective, environmentally friendly methods of reducing heavy metal contamination, including phytoremediation, microbial remediation, and vermiremediation.
