Endogeny, or endogamy, is a term with multiple meanings in scientific publishing and is associated with internal scientific production. It may sometimes be referred to as authorial endogamy, endogenous publication, or self-publishing. Editorial endogeny is inherently controversial, raising questions about conflicts of interest, editorial misconduct, and the integrity of peer review processes. It can be observed across a wide spectrum, from those who publish nothing in their own journals to those who publish at a high rate (>50%) in their own journals. It is detected at a higher rate, particularly in journals related to more specific fields or disciplines where editorial power is concentrated. Ethical guidelines do not explicitly prohibit editors from publishing in their own journals, but they do recommend strict procedures for journals. These procedures include independent peer review of submitted manuscripts, double-blind or open peer review, and transparent disclosure of the process and conflicts of interest to the reader. However, many journals lack policies addressing editorial conflicts of interest. It is important and necessary for scientific journals to expand their conflict of interest policies to include editorial endogeny issues and implement them in practice.
