This chapter addresses the critical role of "grey literature"—resources produced outside of traditional commercial publishing channels—in academic research. Grey literature encompasses various formats, including theses, conference proceedings, preprints, and clinical trial registries. Its strategic importance is examined through three key benefits: providing currency to research, preventing publication bias, and acting as a cross-check to identify published studies missed by database searches. Given the tendency for studies with negative or neutral results to remain unpublished, searching grey literature is crucial for creating a more balanced and comprehensive evidence synthesis. This chapter provides a practical guide for young academics to effectively identify, evaluate, and incorporate high-quality grey literature, enhancing their research's comprehensiveness and validity.
