Respiratory Physiotherapy in Gynecologic Oncology Patients

Özet

This article emphasizes the importance of respiratory physiotherapy in gynecologic oncology patients. Surgical, chemotherapeutic, and radiotherapeutic treatments often lead to respiratory complications—particularly atelectasis and pneumonia—which negatively affect recovery. Respiratory physiotherapy is an effective approach to preserving lung volumes, improving oxygenation, and reducing the risk of complications. Commonly used methods include diaphragmatic breathing, inspiratory muscle training, early mobilization, coughing techniques, incentive spirometry, CPAP, and PEP devices. Evidence from the literature shows that these interventions decrease complication rates, shorten hospital stays, and enhance quality of life. However, the number of randomized controlled trials specifically addressing gynecologic oncology remains limited. Therefore, the development of patient-centered and evidence-based physiotherapy protocols within a multidisciplinary framework is strongly recommended to improve clinical outcomes and ensure safer postoperative recovery for this vulnerable population.
