In this chapter, the historical development, theoretical foundations, and managerial significance of the concepts of strategy, competition, and strategic management are systematically examined. It is emphasized that the concept of strategy originated from military and political contexts and was later transferred into the business domain, where it now lies at the center of organizations’ efforts to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. Strategic management is defined as a comprehensive managerial approach developed to adapt to environmental uncertainties and ensure long-term success. This process encompasses environmental analysis, planning, implementation, and control, and is closely linked to organizations’ core competencies, competitive strategies, and stakeholder expectations. The chapter discusses three main strategies—cost leadership, differentiation, and focus—through which firms can achieve a competitive advantage. Furthermore, distinctions between strategic thinking and strategic planning are highlighted, along with the role of leadership in strategic management. The chapter also discusses the principal tools of strategic analysis—such as SWOT, PEST, and Porter’s Five Forces—that enable organizations to adapt to changing environmental conditions. In conclusion, strategic management is presented as an indispensable approach for organizations to achieve sustainability, competitive advantage, and long-term success by considering both their internal capacities and external environments.
