Özet

Derived from the source plant, Ruta graveolens, Rutin is a flavonoid found in various plants and widely used as a nutraceutical agent. It occurs naturally in a variety of plant based food products, particularly buckwheat kernels, apricots, cherries, grapes, grapefruit, tea, onions, plums and oranges. Rutin, also known as vitamin P, has been extensively studied for its diverse biological effects. This chapter covers the latest information on the chemistry and pharmacology of rutin, its various biological effects, including anticancer, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal and neuroprotective properties and their possible mechanisms. Numerous and diverse in vitro studies in the literature have demonstrated the beneficial effects of rutin on health. This chapter aims to detail the various biological properties of rutin and provide further avenues for utilizing this nutraceutical compound for greater therapeutic benefits in humans.
