This chapter provides a comprehensive examination of the research and analytical methods used in the discipline of physical anthropology to understand human biological diversity. It presents a broad methodological framework ranging from traditional measurement techniques to contemporary digital applications, detailing the scientific foundations of classical techniques such as osteometry, craniometry, somatometry, and anthropometry. Through these approaches, reliable and comparative inferences can be made about both historical human populations (paleoanthropology, archaeoanthropology) and modern societies.
Physical anthropological measurements are not limited to the morphological classification of individuals; they also enable the multidimensional analysis of biological and socio-cultural variables such as gender, age, environmental conditions, and health status. In particular, in the field of forensic anthropology, sex determination, age estimation, and stature calculation are carried out based on scientific validity through techniques such as regression analyses, discriminant functions, and advanced statistical modeling. Measurements of anatomical structures such as the pelvis, skull, and long bones provide high diagnostic reliability in these processes. Examples of the application of these methods and techniques are presented in detail within the chapter.
Today, physical anthropology is undergoing a significant methodological transformation through the integration of advanced technologies such as three-dimensional modeling, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Measurements obtained through these technologies and specialized anthropometric software have become more precise, repeatable, and comparable. Anthropometric data are effectively utilized in various application areas such as athlete performance assessment, child health monitoring, ergonomic design, and tracking physical changes in elderly individuals.
The chapter also emphasizes the importance of ethical principles in anthropological data collection processes. Informed consent, data privacy, cultural sensitivity, and scientific responsibility are considered integral components of methodological validity. This ethical framework, supported by indicators such as the technical error rate, forms the basis of scientific reliability.
In conclusion, physical anthropology is not merely a field limited to anatomical measurement techniques; it is defined as a holistic scientific discipline equipped with advanced methodological tools that analyzes human biology in evolutionary, environmental, and cultural contexts. This chapter aims to serve as a comprehensive and up-to-date reference for both researchers seeking specialization in the field and students interested in the subject.
