Anthropology is a scientific discipline that examines humans holistically through their biological, cultural, historical, and linguistic dimensions. Meaning “the science of humans,” anthropology seeks to answer complex questions about human origins, evolution, diversity, and social ways of life. Although it has at times lost its scientific identity due to biased and erroneous perspectives on humans and their origins—especially during the era of geographical discoveries—it now rejects such ideological deviations by demonstrating that the concept of race has no biological basis. Anthropology is divided into four main subfields: biological anthropology, which studies human evolution and biological diversity; cultural anthropology, which explores social life and cultural patterns; archaeology, which investigates material remains of past societies; and linguistic anthropology, which analyzes the relationship between language and culture. These subfields collectively help us understand the human experience in both historical and contemporary contexts. The field is grounded in holistic and comparative approaches that consider human biology and culture together. Anthropology has both theoretical (academic) and applied dimensions, contributing valuable insights to address today’s complex societal challenges. Additionally, the concept of the Anthropocene—highlighting the impact of human activity on global ecosystems—is among anthropology’s current areas of interest. In sum, anthropology is indispensable not only for understanding different societies but also for critically examining the relationship between humans, nature, and culture.
