Vitamins and minerals can protect against oxidative damage and reduce the risk of cancer by neutralizing free radicals and other reactive species. Regular human exposure to vitamins and minerals comes from the diet. The 2020–2025 U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend that, in addition to vitamins and minerals, nutrient needs be met primarily through nutrient-dense foods and beverages, as they contain other health-promoting ingredients that contain little or no added sugar, saturated fat, and sodium. Similarly, other organizations, including the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (2018); the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research (2018) and the American Heart Association (2014), have guidelines that recommend that healthy adults primarily meet their nutrient needs through a healthy diet and that vitamins should not be used for cardiovascular disease or cancer prevention. The Canadian Cancer Society recommends that, with the exception of vitamin D, nutrient needs be met through a healthy diet. For vitamin D, it is recommended that individuals talk to their doctors about taking supplements during the fall and winter months, considering the possible role of vitamin D in cancer prevention.
