Sleep disturbances are a common issue in cancer patients, negatively affecting their quality of life, treatment adherence, and prognosis. Among these disturbances, insomnia, sleep apnea, circadian rhythm disorders, and restless leg syndrome are particularly prominent. Contributing factors include the side effects of cancer treatment, psychological stress, pain, and depression.
The treatment of sleep disturbances primarily involves Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), sleep hygiene practices, and lifestyle modifications. In cases where these methods prove ineffective, pharmacological treatments such as FDA-approved hypnotic agents should be applied with caution. Additionally, non-pharmacological therapies, including electroacupuncture and massage therapy, may offer benefits.
Effective management of sleep disturbances not only enhances quality of life but also improves treatment response rates and reduces healthcare costs. Therefore, early diagnosis of sleep disturbances should be approached with a personalized strategy tailored to individual needs, accompanied by a multidisciplinary treatment plan. The management of sleep
disturbances in cancer treatment is critically important to support patients' overall health and improve their prognosis.
