Animal breeding program aims to improve traits such as production, health, fertility, and environmental sustainability by increasing the genetic potential of animals. A breeding program consists of stages such as defining breeding objectives, data collecting, estimation of breeding value, selection and mating, spread out genetic improvements, and evaluating the results. Success of program depends on the collaboration of breeder organizations, the private sector, and public institutions. Breeding objectives can change over time in response to consumer demands, environmental concerns, and technological advances. For example, dairy cattle breeding has shifted from a yield-focused approach to balanced objectives such as health, welfare, and feed efficiency. With technological advances, more traits are being incorporated into selection indices, and genetic assessments utilize a combination of phenotypic, pedigree, and genomic data.
