Microbiota and colostrum play a critical role in the development of the immune system of newborns. Microbiota refers to the ecosystem of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses, and especially the gut microbiota has an impact on many systems such as immunity, metabolism and neurodevelopment. Since the immune system in domestic animals is not fully developed at birth, colostrum intake is vital for passive immunity. Colostrum is rich in immunoglobulins (especially IgG), growth factors, vitamins and antimicrobial components and should be taken within the first 24 hours after birth. Immune transfer via colostrum in species such as cattle, horses, cats and dogs varies depending on placental structure. The microbial content of colostrum also influences the development of the gut microbiota. Especially beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium support digestive health. Colostrum quality is associated with hygiene, storage and processing conditions, and missing or poor quality colostrum can lead to diseases such as diarrhea. Consequently, colostrum management is a fundamental step in neonatal health.
