From the past to the present, the most commonly used animal species in experimental studies are rodents. The species in this order are very common among mammals. It is of great importance to know the morphological characteristics of animals when performing experimental modeling. In this section, the morphological features of the tongue and the lingual papillae on it are handled. In rodents, there are five types of lingual papillae on the tongue: filiform papillae, conical papillae, fungiform papillae, vallate papillae and foliate papillae. Of these papillae, filiform papillae and conical papillae are mechanically effective papillae. Fungiform papillae, vallate papillae and foliate papillae are the papillae that receive the sense of taste. When these papillae were compared morphologically among rodent species, it was found that there were great similarities but some differences were also observed. Knowledge of these similarities and differences will help in the selection of nutrients to be given to animals in experimental studies. It will also provide convenience in oral administration.
