Gingival retraction is a crucial procedure in restorative and prosthetic dentistry to enhance impression accuracy, achieve hemostasis, and improve the visibility of preparation margins. Various techniques, including mechanical, surgical, chemomechanical, and modern approaches, are employed for this purpose. Mechanical methods rely on physical displacement, while surgical techniques involve direct tissue removal. Chemomechanical strategies incorporate chemical agents to support hemostasis. Recently, less invasive and more patient-friendly alternatives have been developed. This book chapter comprehensively explores the principles of gingival retraction, the advantages of different techniques, and their clinical applications.
