Syringomyelia (SM) is the name given to septated, tubular cyst-filled cavities extending along one or more spinal segments within the spinal cord. There are no ependymal cells within the syringomyelia cavity. The term syringomyelia was first used by Ollivier D'Angers in 1827 for cystic cavities within the spinal cord. The term hydromyelia is defined as cystic enlargement of the central canal of the spinal cord. The term hydrosyringomyelia is used as a synonym in cases where syringomyelia and hydromyelia terms cannot be distinguished clinically or radiologically.
