Medicines are an essential component of healthcare. However, they are costly products, accounting for a significant portion of overall healthcare expenditure in most countries. The irrational use of medicines is a major problem facing many healthcare systems worldwide. Such practices can lead to poor healthcare delivery, which can put patients at risk and waste scarce resources that could be used to meet other urgent healthcare needs. The concept of ‘rational use of medicines’ can sometimes be confusing and not easily understood by patients, healthcare providers, policy makers or the public, who must collaborate effectively to overcome this challenge. The fundamental principles of rational medicine use, effective prescribing and dispensing, as well as some of the factors that contribute to irrational medicine use and the potential consequences of such practices, are discussed in this review. It is also intended to provide a clear, concise and easily understandable explanation of the basic concepts of medicine use for healthcare professionals, patients and the public.
