Energy Metabolism During Menopause
Özet
As women spend a significant portion of their lives in the postmenopausal period, understanding changes in energy expenditure and energy requirements during this stage is of great importance. During menopause, women experience hormonal changes such as decreased circulating estrogen levels and increased FSH and androgen levels. These hormonal alterations influence body composition, physical activity levels, and dietary intake, thereby affecting energy homeostasis. Notably, estrogen appears to be a key factor in maintaining energy balance and protecting women from various diseases. Disruptions in energy homeostasis and lipid metabolism may contribute to metabolic and chronic diseases. This review focuses on the mechanisms underlying menopause-related changes in energy metabolism and highlights modifiable factors that could improve quality of life in the postmenopausal period.
