Metabolic disorders can be caused by hereditary factors or acquired environmental effects. These disorders result from deficiencies or dysfunctions in enzymes, coenzymes, or cofactors that regulate biochemical processes in the body. Most metabolic disorders occur during calving and the transition from the dry period to lactation. During this period, ketosis is the most common metabolic disorder, significantly affecting productivity in cows and primarily developing due to negative energy balance. Other metabolic diseases in cattle include pregnancy toxemia, grass tetany, high-altitude disease, and white muscle disease.
