Infections such as COVID-19, meningitis/encephalitis and HIV in children and adolescents cause neuropsychiatric symptoms and are important for consultation-liaison psychiatry. COVID-19, the pandemic and the accompanying social and societal changes, as well as the prolonged closure of places such as schools and activity centres, may have negative educational, psychological and developmental effects on children and young people, causing feelings of loneliness, anxiety and uncertainty. Meningitis/encephalitis can lead to cognitive disorders, behavioural changes, loss of educational and psychological functioning and emotional problems. HIV infection may cause mood disorders and neurocognitive decline due to both the disease itself and the side effects of antiretroviral therapy. The psychiatric effects of these infections should be addressed with early diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach.
