Manganez
Manganese is one of the trace elements essential for the human body. Tea, cereals, hazelnuts, and drinking water constitute the primary sources of manganese. After being absorbed in the small intestine, it is metabolized in the liver and excreted via bile. There is limited clinical experience regarding manganese deficiency, and it is generally assumed that the dietary intake meets the body’s requirements. However, intoxication may occur due to both primary and secondary exposures stemming from manganese present in drinking water and its widespread industrial use. Since manganese can cross the blood-brain barrier, it may accumulate in various organs, particularly in the brain. Such accumulation is associated with psychiatric disorders in the acute phase and may subsequently lead to Parkinsonism. In view of these findings, caution is warranted concerning the risk of intoxication in children with industrial exposure—especially adolescents and those with impaired liver and bile functions. Public health initiatives should be implemented to minimize exposure.
