Getting Started With Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery

Özet

This chapter explores the history and evolution of minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS). The field began with Ludwig Rehn’s successful heart injury repair in 1896. The invention of the cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) device marked the advent of modern cardiac surgery, enabling less invasive techniques. In the 1990s, surgeries through small incisions became more common, leading to the first video-assisted mitral valve repair in 1996. MICS quickly gained popularity due to its benefits, including smaller incisions, fewer postoperative complications, and faster recovery.
