Urinary catheterization is defined as the method of draining urine stored in the bladder using a catheter. Urinary catheterization is applied in two different ways, transurethral indwelling catheterization and clean intermittent catheterization, depending on the purpose of use and the needs of the patient. Transurethral indwelling catheterization is one of the most frequently performed applications in hospitals. Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is a method preferred over indwelling catheterization in patients who cannot empty their bladders for various reasons.
Nurses have important roles and responsibilities in urinary catheterization applications, which are vital for maintaining urinary system functions but can cause serious complications if not applied correctly. While the decision to apply or remove the urinary catheter is made by the physician, clinical nurses are responsible for the application, removal and routine care of the catheter. Nurses have important responsibilities in providing the patient/caregiver with the skills to apply CIC applications.
