Özet

Tarihsel olarak, endospor oluşturan tüm anaerobik gram-pozitif basiller Clostridium cinsi içinde sınıflandırılmıştır. Bu bakterilerin genel özellikleri türler arasında değişim göstermektedir. Örneğin, sporlar bazı türlerde (Clostridium perfringens, Clostridium ramosum) nadiren gösterilir, bazı türler aerotoleran olup aerobik kültürde üreyebilir (Clostridium tertium, Clostridium histolyticum) ve bazı clostridia türleri gram-negatif boyanabilir (Clostridium ramosum, Clostridium clostridioforme). Gen dizileme tekniklerinin gelişimi ile birlikte bu mikroorganizmaların sınıflandırılmasında yol katedilmiştir. Bu bölümde Clostridium cinsi bakterilerden bahsedilecektir.
