Patients undergoing cardiac surgery experience significant surgical trauma and metabolic stress before, during, and after the operation. Due to the extracorporeal circulation involved in open-heart surgery, these patients differ from other surgical patients. Patients who have undergone heart surgery are routinely exposed to severe systemic inflammation, which can lead to organ damage and dysfunction. Improving postoperative outcomes in cardiac surgery requires not only advancements in surgical techniques and technology but also a patient-centered, multidisciplinary approach from the time surgery is considered until full recovery. Nutritional support is a fundamental component of this approach.
