Diseases of the hoof joint and distal phalanx are of great concern to both the equine practitioner and the horse owner. These diseases have a direct impact on the animal's performance and mobility, as well as affecting its welfare and health. This chapter discusses the aetiology, clinical findings, management and prognosis of common hoof joint and distal phalanx disorders such as pedal osteitis, septic pedal osteitis, synovitis of the foot joint, septic arthritis, osteoarthritis, articular and periarticular phalangeal exostoses (ringbone), distal ringbone, subchondral cystic lesions of the third phalanx (SCL) and subsolar abscess.
